Born and raised in the “Garden State” of New Jersey, Catherine Sienko studied the fine art of painting, sculpture and photography at the School for Visual Arts and Cooper Union in New York City and The Pratt Institute in the Borough of Brooklyn. She studied printmaking and sculpture with the direction of Louise Bourgeois, painting and drawing with Marjorie Strider and fine art photography and printmaking with Todd Watts.
Catherine’s work shows a developed, mature artist; with traditional imagery and techniques. With a wide variety and quantity of photos, she exhibits the range of her work and experience. Her work has been exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery, N.Y.C. She has been featured at galleries and museums in New Jersey, New York and Arizona. She has been published in numerous publications. Besides her own fine art photography, Catherine is a master printer for photographers and art collectors.
I was drawn to photography as another creative medium to express what I was discovering and feeling. Much of my work is now digital and my concentration is about the photograph and the finished fine art print.
My inspiration is largely the natural world, particularly Arizona’s Sonoran Desert. I value intimacy of place, landscapes where I’ve found a deep communion with subject matter. The learning and the associated photographic images are tied to the acuteness of my receptivity, a discipline of letting go that is both elusive and sometimes frustrating. When I am making photographs, I become “one” with the subject matter. For me, the process is a “non-effort” in becoming fully present and engaged in my immediate surroundings.
For the viewer it’s a chance to stand in my shoes and see what I see.
